Heading into Wednesday’s game against Deerfield, Choate Girls’ Varsity Hockey was looking to rebound after dropping their past four games. Since the game was the only scheduled game between Choate and Deerfield’s girls’ varsity hockey teams, both teams were going to leave it all out on the ice. Unfortunately, Choate lost to Deerfield 1-4, despite putting up a good fight.
The game got off to a quick start as both teams traded opportunities, carrying the puck into each other’s offensive zones and taking shots. Senior Kaitlyn O’Donohoe ’19 snapped off a few quality shots, but Deerfield’s goalie was quick to stop the effort.
The scoreless tie was broken midway through the first period when a Deerfield forward snuck one past the Choate goalie. A Deerfield powerplay led to an abundance of chances. Eventually, Deerfield came through on that power play to take a 2-0 lead.
Deerfield scored two minutes later off an odd-man rush. Despite the goals, sophomore goalie Lexington Secreto ’21 made some tough saves to finish the period.
After surrendering three goals in the first period, Choate Girls’ Varsity Hockey left the locker room determined to put one past the Deerfield goalie. With an experienced and talented group of forwards, Deerfield possessed the puck in Choate’s defensive zone for much of the second period. The girls responded with some physical play and chances of their own. O’Donohoe led the team in the offensive end with multiple shots in the period, and junior Isa Caputo ’20 played a major role in preventing Deerfield from scoring. Secreto settled down after the first period and made numerous difficult glove saves to keep Choate in the game. Choate had a few good opportunities to end the second, including a few odd-man rushes that unfortunately did not result in goals.
Choate followed their improved play in the second with an even better third. Choate took a penalty early in the third, but the girls were able to kill the penalty without giving up a goal. Choate responded with a few good scoring opportunities that eventually culminated in a powerplay goal from Morgann Skoda ’22 . The two sides traded opportunities, as the time remaining on the clock dwindled. Choate had a power play during the final minute, and several opportunities to score, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Although Girls’ Varsity Hockey suffered a difficult loss to Deerfield, they fought back, and look to win against a tough Canterbury team on Saturday.
